Echo quotes from the forums

Postby ThePenkethPedant »

As today`s (Tuesday) Echo quote from the forums is football related and as the other forums are `locked`, I`ll post it here:

" The land should have been donated to the young people of this city who are not rich kids but would like the opportunity to play football. "

-DOODAH

(Dunno which `land` is the subject of this suggestion)

Tuesday`s Echo quote referred to Bellefield, Everton`s former training ground in West Derby.

Wednesday`s Echo quote from the forums:

" I find it utterly shocking that a person in his position still believes Hillsborough was caused by the fans behaviour. "

I take it this refers to jeremy hunt ( would not let me spell his surname the way I wanted too).

I have written my thoughts on his blog.

The remark as quoted was unnecessary -snag is, it contained a grain of truth, insofar as for more spectators than could safely be accommodated to end up in that section of the ground must have involved some pressure or pushing in from the late-comers; this often used to happen at most grounds where a capacity crowd attended, and was done innocently enough and rarely resulted in fatalities ( but cf Botlon disaster,1946). This accepted practice used to cause nothing worse than discomfort and irritation to those who had selected their spec and taken up their place early. The inherently unsafe design of the Leppings Lane pens, coupled with the mass late arrival and inadequate signing and policing sadly resulted in tragedy on that dreadful day.

Thursday`s Echo quote from the forums:

" It`s frightening the ignorance some politicians have about the UK`s worst ever sports disaster. "

PP - I have always believed that all it would have taken is Honesty and 21 years of hurt searching for justice would not have been necessary , but still we are waiting for it. I do believe it will come eventually and it keeps me going.

In my experience i have very rarely seen Police or relevant authorities make honest statements when to do so would portray them in bad light or mean they had to pay damages, and as I see it that is the main problem.

Bad decisions, mistakes , inexperience - you name it, it happened that fateful day. It was not meant to happen , it was an awful accident brought on by mistakes/incompetence etc, and it should have been acknowledged immediately.

96 RIP

I`m unsure as to who should be arraigned as the principal villains of the piece:you could take the responsibility for Hillsborough back as far as the FA, for selecting an unsafe ground for the semi-final, exacerbated by their choice of Leppings Lane for our fans, rather than the more expansive end allocated to Forest.
The Sheffield Council Dept which gave the ground a Safety Certificate is also culpable as is the Sheff Wed club and it`s ground architect who designed the infamous deathtrap pen, and also failed to ensure that effective signing and stewarding inside the stadium were available to direct incoming spectators. Next come the police, who were inefficient in their arrangements outside the ground, made the mistake of ordering the opening of a gate rather than delaying the kick-off and failed to respond quickly enough to the situation unfolding before them in the pen. There has also been criticism of the Sheff Wed club and the local emergency services in respect of the number of medical staff, ambulances etc on hand and their apparent tardiness in arriving to treat the injured. All mistakes and inadequacies made worse by refusal of those responsible to admit to them -even worse, attempting to absolve themselves by trying to pass on the guilt to the innocent by lies and cover-ups.

Friday`s Echo quote from the forums:

" That`s a great idea - but I still think they they keep the fines; in fact, treble the fines and the number of points. "

-mpd

( The first `they` seems as if it should be `that`; no idea what it`s all about)

Saturday`s Echo quote from the forums:

" The Lib Dems seem to have presided over one big gravy train for the people in their clique. "

-JB_Kirkdale

Monday`s Echo quote from the forums:

" God Bless Beryl. One of our own, a not so rare Scouse talent "

-Deanosoff

(Referring to novelist Beryl Bainbridge, who died recently. Born in Liverpool, she had lived in London`s Camden Town for over 40 years)

The police control of traffic prior to the game caused people to be late at the game and Lfc traffic was diverted away from Leppings and further away from that side of the ground, the whole thing was a mess from start to finish.

Don`t know for sure, Igor, but the word `forums` doesn`t now appear in the `quote` panel, just the wording " from liverpoolecho.co.uk ", so it could be that some are from emails direct to the Echo. Some of the names are familiar, including today`s contributor, some are unfamiliar, as you say. I`ll continue to use the printed quotes as if from the forums.

" When there was cash Labour spent it all in Manchester - the sooner Liverpool wakes up to that betrayal the better."
